David Evans appeared at Minshull Street Crown Court on Friday, August 7, having previously pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition without a certificate.
The court heard that Evans, 59, did not have a certificate for the gun or ammunition and that he had "no legit purpose" for the weapon.
It was also heard in court that Evans was hiding the gun for criminals and that he did not intend to use it himself.
When passing sentence, Judge Tina Landale said to Evans: "Clearly you were trying to hide [the gun] until it was required by drug dealing criminals."
She sentenced Evans to five years in prison and ordered for the gun and ammunition to be forfeited and destroyed.
