The discovery is renewing attention on a pivotal era when Christianity moved from its predominantly Jewish and biblical setting toward the increasingly Roman institutional Church.
Archaeologists uncovered a column base, walls, and sections of pavement belonging to the church during continuing excavations at the site.
At Nicaea, however, church leaders moved toward establishing a unified Christian observance of the resurrection independent of the Jewish calculation of Passover.

Nicaea did not literally erase Christianity’s Jewish foundations; such a thing would have been impossible.
