The grief-stricken mother of Tasia Fortune, the 29-year-old black woman found hanged from a tree behind an abandoned Mississippi home last week, refuses to believe that her daughter took her own life. Investigators have not indicated whether they consider Fortune’s death suspicious, saying only that they are actively working “to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.” 3 Christy Spivey, Fortune’s mother, said she saw her daughter just a week before police found her body. Jackson police have released little information about Fortune’s death and no suspects have been identified.
