With more than 400 wineries and 14,000 acres of vineyards, Pennsylvania is a major producer of wine, according to the state Department of Agriculture. Tom Stutzman, vintner at Red Shale Ridge Vineyards near Hegins, said wine and fall seem to go together. More time is needed to develop the richer, more complex flavors and deeper colors demanded by red wines. The Chambourcin grape grows well in Pennsylvania, he said, and makes a dry red wine. After 28 years of growing grapes and making wine, Stutzman has decided to retire.
