Summer Reading: A Necessary Evil

It’s a common thought students from elementary to high school have loathed their summer reading assignments for as long as they have been assigned.
To destroy the sanctity of the summer is an offense to children everywhere, fighting the good fight for their right to a lazy homeostasis.
Most students consider reading to be a chore, a fault not of theirs necessarily but largely having to do with the modern education system.
Rigid, inflexible assessments like tests and pop quizzes detract from the purpose of literature by removing the interpretive element of reading.
Ultimately, the goal of summer reading assignments is to encourage students to read on their own time.
