One year ago today, President Donald Trump announced a "public safety emergency" in Washington, D.C., leading to the deployment of nearly 2,000 National Guard members to the nation's capital. Within days, 450 federal law enforcement officers and nearly 2,000 National Guard members, including troops from Republican-led states, were patrolling the streets to "restore law and order" and address "the epidemic of crime in our Nation's capital." As Reason's Katherine Mangu-Ward reported in November 2025, carjackings, assaults, and homicides all dropped in neighborhoods that experienced an increased federal presence. Although a federal court preliminarily ruled the deployment illegal last November, the Trump administration has been permitted to keep the National Guard members deployed while the appeals process is pending. Today, court proceedings are still ongoing, and approximately 4,600 National Guard members are currently in the nation's capital, with plans moving forward to acquire up to 2,000 housing units to support long-term, and more permanent, deployment.
