Forest fires in Europe are already the norm in summer, but they are getting bigger and harder to fight. Forest fires are turning out to be ruthless seasonal enemies, along with water shortages and crop stress, all of them driven by man-made climate change. Most French firefighters are equipped with balaclavas that alleviate heat but do not filter carcinogenic particles. In a press release entitled ‘Don’t Look Up’, Chabbouh listed the lack of state-of-the-art respiratory gear as one among many disadvantages facing French fire brigades. In effect, thousands of dedicated French firefighters are now volunteers.
