Remembering LCDR James Ennes of the USS Liberty (1933-2026)

LCDR Ennes, then Lieutenant Ennes, was serving aboard the USS Liberty (AGTR-5) when, on June 8, 1967, Israeli forces began a combined aerial and naval assault, lasting over an hour, that killed 34 Americans and wounded more than 170 others.
LCDR Ennes did recover sufficiently to serve in the Navy as a cryptologic officer until his retirement in 1978.
Others had written articles and chapters, but LCDR Ennes wrote the first book on the subject.
In a 2007 addendum LCDR Ennes described the book’s reception:“Because I had criticized Israel, I could be attacked on political or even ethnic and racist grounds.
In addition to our work on the case of the USS Liberty, Jim and I had at least two other things in common.
