Detailed assessments of North Bridge at Junction 6 of the M42, which was closed to traffic in July, have found that it is “at risk of further deterioration” and must be demolished.
National Highways said the “ageing” bridge – which was opened in 1976 – will be demolished “in the coming weeks” during an already planned road closure for works associated with HS2.
It said the detailed inspections revealed it is “at risk of further deterioration and strengthening would not provide a long-term solution”.
It added that “plans are now being developed for a temporary bridge to be introduced at the junction until a replacement structure can be installed”.
“A General Inspection is undertaken every two years, and a more detailed Principal Inspection undertaken every six years.
