Hyderabad: The Telangana government is considering a proposal to give incentives to sugarcane farmers on the lines of Rs 500 bonus being given to farmers growing paddy that yields fine variety of rice. The government will soon announce sops to promote sugarcane production. In view of the shortfall of sugarcane to run all sugar units, the state government has decided to encourage farmers to grow sugarcane by providing incentives. Officials said that the State Agriculture Department has been asked to submit a report on the help being provided to sugarcane farmers in other states and recommend steps to promote sugarcane cultivation in the state. The representatives brought to the attention of officials the fact that high cultivation costs and shortage of agricultural labour have become major challenges for sugarcane farmers.
