New figures from Geoscience Australia have revealed that the nation’s energy resources sector generated $180 billion in export earnings in 2023-24, outlining the importance of Australia’s resources to global energy markets. The figure, equivalent to around 27 per cent of Australia’s total export earnings, comes from Geoscience Australia’s latest Australia’s Energy Commodity Resources (AECR) 2026 publication. The report provides a comprehensive assessment of Australia’s non-renewable energy resources as at the end of 2024, while also examining the development of emerging low-carbon energy resources. Australia ranked as the eighth-highest primary energy producer globally in 2024, accounting for 2.7 per cent of global energy commodity production. The nation held one-third of known global uranium resources and exported around eight times more energy than it imported.
