The UK Met Office is incorporating forecasting tools developed through the £20 million government-backed SWIMMR programme, which ran from 2019 to 2024. Its capabilities were tested during the major solar storm of May 2024, when the model identified substations where transformer alarms were subsequently triggered. Further research is now examining how extreme space weather could affect the UK’s future grid. Space weather is classified as a top-tier national risk in the UK, alongside threats such as pandemics and major flooding. The Met Office, which has operated a dedicated space weather centre since 2014, provides round-the-clock forecasts and warnings.
