Fox is developing an animated comedy series based on Joe Dirt, the 2001 live-action feature about a janitor with a fused-on mullet crossing the country to find the parents who abandoned him. David Spade is back to voice the title character and executive produce, Scott Gairdner writes, and Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment co-produce. Gairdner created the Comedy Central series Moonbeam City, wrote for Fox's HouseBroken and executive produced Kyle Mooney's Saturday Morning All Star Hits! Joe Dirt, directed by Dennie Gordon and written by Spade and Wolf, opened in 2001 to poor reviews before eventually becoming a cult favorite. A sequel, Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser, premiered on Sony's Crackle in 2015, the first movie sequel made for streaming.
