FARGO, ND – Clay County Attorney Brian Melton is pushing back against claims made by his election opponent, Amber Gustafson, who argued that his office’s conviction rate lags behind neighboring counties. Appearing on The Steve Hallstrom Show Monday, Melton rejected Gustafson’s assertion that Clay County’s conviction rate sits at or below 60 percent compared to higher rates in nearby Becker and Otter Tail counties. Defending his nearly two-decade tenure in office, Melton asserted that his office’s actual performance figures and prosecutorial philosophy tell a much different story. Melton argued that judging a prosecutor’s office purely on conviction percentages misrepresents the core mission of public safety. Beyond conviction statistics, Melton maintained that effective leadership requires managing complex local issues, including rising drug-related offenses, mental health commitments, and ensuring accountability within specialized programs like drug court.
