The Constitution does not state that the Church is separate from the state, particularly the Armenian Apostolic Church, Civil Contract parliamentary faction lawmaker Sisak Gabrielyan said during the National Assembly’s August 11 session, 1lurer.am reports. “When the 1995 Constitution was adopted, there was nothing in it about the Church; there were only provisions concerning freedom of religion and conscience. “The Constitution currently in force says that religious organizations are separate from the state. But then, when it specifically addresses the Armenian Apostolic Church, it says that, unlike other religious organizations, relations between the Armenian Apostolic Church and the state may be regulated by law. In other words, the Constitution has given us, the legislature, the opportunity to come here and regulate relations between the state and the Armenian Apostolic Church — something that, under the Constitution, we cannot do with regard to organizations other than the Armenian Apostolic Church.
