NHVR or National Accreditation Regulator?
['Steve Shearer']
Big Rigs
These questions are important and need answering if the industry is to have real faith that we have an effective, fair, responsible and accountable National Heavy Vehicle Regulator and not just a National Accreditation Regulator, which will not serve the industry, the community nor the country well.
NHVR defends broader role in truck safety under reformsPaul Salvati, NHVR Chief Operations Officer, responds below:The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) welcomes discussion about the future of heavy vehicle regulation and recognises the important role industry plays in improving safety outcomes across Australia.
The suggestion that the NHVR is becoming a “National Accreditation Regulator” does not reflect the breadth of the NHVR’s responsibilities or the purpose of the recent accreditation reforms.
The NHVR regulates more than 250,000 heavy vehicle operators across Australia, regardless of whether they participate in the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS), or the new Heavy Vehicle Accreditation (HVA) scheme.
While participation is voluntary, the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) applies equally to all heavy vehicle operators.
