Super movers were defined as individuals whose walking speed ranked among the top 7% for their age and sex. A separate analysis of nearly 200 older adults found that super movers experienced slower declines in memory, processing speed, and visual-spatial abilities. Brain MRI scans also showed they had larger hippocampal volumes, a brain region critical for memory and navigation. However, autopsy data from nearly 700 participants revealed that super movers had similar levels of Alzheimer’s-related amyloid plaques and tau tangles as other older adults. Despite carrying comparable levels of disease-related brain pathology, they maintained better cognitive performance and were less likely to have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
