Sony Group and TSMC are in talks to invest a combined USD 6.4 billion in a joint image sensor factory in Japan, according to Bloomberg. TSMC is the world’s largest contract ​chipmaker while Sony ‌is the world’s largest maker ​of image sensors that are widely used in ​smartphones and autos. According to Reuters, the new facility will be located inside Sony’s campus in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture. Sony Semiconductor Solutions will hold a controlling stake in the venture — about 60% — with TSMC owning the remaining 40%. Sony and TSMC are targeting demand from the automotive and robotics sectors, Bloomberg said.
