Churchill Downs, Inc.—owners of the fabled racecourse that hosts the Kentucky Derby in May—joined the New York Racing Association last week in announcing a new six-race series called the Thoroughbred Championship Series. The series for three-year-olds will feature the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, the latter of which is set to return to Belmont Park on Long Island next June. The new series features two of the three races in the traditional Triple Crown, leaving behind the Preakness Stakes, which is set to return to Pimlico Race Course next year. The last two winners of the Kentucky Derby—Sovereignty and Golden Tempo—skipped the Preakness entirely before winning the Belmont Stakes. The 153rd running of the Kentucky Derby will take place May 1, while the 159th Belmont Stakes is set for June 5.
