The return of displaced Syrian Kurds to Ras al-Ain was suspended Monday after armed groups attacked members of the first group entering the northeastern town, which Turkey and allied Syrian fighters seized from Kurdish forces in 2019. Several people involved in the attack were arrested, said Mahmud Khalil Ali, deputy head of security forces in Syria’s Hasakeh province. Another group had been scheduled to travel to Ras al-Ain in the coming days. The attack prompted a demonstration in the Kurdish-majority city of Qamishli, where protesters tried to enter the headquarters of Syrian security forces before officers pushed them back. About 100,000 displaced people from the Ras al-Ain area have applied to return, according to the committee representing them.
