Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has submitted a bill requiring foreign booking platforms such as Airbnb and Booking.com to appoint representatives in Turkey. The levy would go to the Turkey Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA), which finances activities to promote and develop Turkey’s tourism sector. The Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB) sued 10 foreign travel platforms earlier this year, arguing that their operations in Turkey created unfair competition for domestic travel agencies. Companies including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, X and LinkedIn have been required to appoint local representatives under Turkey’s internet regulations. The new bill would extend the regulatory framework to foreign digital platforms through which accommodation, airline tickets and transfer services are sold.
