The St Louis Cardinals continue to lose ground in the wild card race, falling behind early to the Philadelphia Phillies before dropping the 6-5 opener Monday, Aug. 10 at Busch Stadium.
The Phillies took advantage of a throwing error by starting pitcher Hunter Dobbins to score Brandon Marsh in the second inning.
The Cardinals made it a one-run game in the sixth with an Alec Burleson single scoring JJ Wetherholt and Iván Herrera.
Hunter Dobbins also fanned six but took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks.
The loss now has the Cardinals 4.5 games behind the Phillies and Diamondbacks for the second wild card spot, as Saint Louis fall to 59-60.
