Turkey’s recently established New Party, led by former Republican People’s Party (CHP) chairman Özgür Özel, has emerged as the country’s most popular political party with 34.8 percent support in a new election poll, leading President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) by more than 5 percentage points. The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) was the only party besides the New Party and the AKP to exceed Turkey’s 7 percent electoral threshold, receiving 7.6 percent. The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), the far-right ally of Erdoğan’s AKP, received 6.9 percent, followed by the İYİ (Good) Party at 4.5 percent and the CHP at 4 percent. The far-right anti-immigrant Victory Party (ZP) received 3.7 percent, the Key Party (A Parti) 3.2 percent and the Islamist New Welfare Party (YRP) 2.3 percent. The New Party was established with 91 lawmakers in Turkey’s 600-member parliament, putting it behind the AKP, which had 277 seats at the time.
