Przewalski’s horses—often called the Horses of Chernobyl—have established a surprising foothold inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ), one of the most studied post-disaster landscapes on Earth. Ancient Lineage With a New HomeWhile often celebrated as the last truly wild horses, a 2018 genomic study revealed that Przewalski’s horses descend from an ancient domesticated lineage. Motion-activated cameras revealed the horses routinely seek shelter in abandoned barns and buildings scattered throughout the CEZ. Our results indicate Przewalski’s horses routinely use abandoned structures in the CEZ – says James Beasley, an associate professor at the University of Georgia. For Przewalski’s horses, this environment offers both challenges and opportunities to re-establish a genetically healthy population.
