[]
Horseed Media
Posted by: Khalid Yussuf The Somali Future Council (GMS) has strongly opposed plans to elect a new Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People and to extend the terms of the country’s federal institutions.
10 August, 2026The council said the constitutional term of the Federal Parliament expired on 14 April 2026, arguing that the legislature therefore no longer has the constitutional or political legitimacy to elect a new speaker.
The council called for decisions concerning elections and the expiration of official terms to be based on the constitution and on an inclusive political agreement involving all relevant Somali stakeholders.
In a statement, the Somali Future Council reiterated its position on the country’s ongoing electoral dispute and called for an inclusive political process that reflects the interests of all sides.
It warned that unilateral legal or political measures taken without agreement could deepen the country’s political crisis.
