Kennedy Jr.’s attacks on Big Food could lead to attacks on Big Ag, an Agriculture Department official in the first Trump administration told the nation’s sugar growers here last week. In a speech at the American Sugar Alliance’s International Sweetener Symposium, Brandon Lipps, who served as agriculture deputy undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services in the first Trump administration and now runs a consulting firm Caprock Strategies, said, “I am concerned we now have a movement against Big Food that can move to Big Ag.” “Sugar is not the single cause, maybe not even a major cause, of the health problem in this country,” but Kennedy has declared sugar to be “poison,” Lipps said. Asked whether the election of Democrats in the midterms may soften the influence of Kennedy and the MAHA movement, Lipps said Democrats, who have historically championed nutrition, “will want to take ownership of these issues.” Lipps also noted that some officials and activists now say that Big Food adopted the tactics of tobacco companies and made people addicted to food that is killing them.
