Ole Miss football icon Archie Manning is set to be permanently honored outside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium with a new statue, the Ole Miss Athletics Department announced Monday. Sculpted by Dr. Kim Sessums, the monument will stand south of the stadium and north of the Olivia and Archie Manning Athletics Performance Center, surrounded by campus roads featuring speed limits honoring Archie and Eli Manning. “Archie Manning is one of the most iconic figures in the history of Ole Miss,” said Keith Carter, Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics. A Drew, Mississippi native, Manning starred as starting quarterback for three seasons, earning All-American honors, two All-SEC selections, and finishing third in 1970 Heisman Trophy voting. He became the first Ole Miss player to have his jersey number (18) retired.
