Exercise Ravitaillement en Vol brought together a U.S. Air Force TC-135 training aircraft, a Royal Air Force RC-135 Rivet Joint and a French Air and Space Force A330 MRTT Phénix.
The mission demonstrated that aircraft, crews and command teams from three NATO nations can operate as an increasingly integrated force.
Conducting the mission in French national airspace required coordination through U.S., British and French diplomatic and military channels to secure clearances and align procedures, communications, command relationships and emergency actions.
The French integration built on earlier testing conducted at Edwards Air Force Base, California, in October 2023, when a Royal Australian Air Force KC-30A refueled a U.S. Air Force RC-135.
For NATO, the exercise demonstrated how separate national capabilities can operate as a more resilient, unified force—reducing reliance on any single tanker fleet or support network.
