The loss comes roughly two weeks after a Ukrainian F-16 crashed during a combat mission on July 29 following an in-flight emergency. A Ukrainian MiG-29 crashed during a mission in Poltava Oblast overnight on June 26–27, with the pilot ejecting safely and receiving medical treatment. On June 16, a Ukrainian Su-24 bomber crashed in Khmelnytskyi Oblast, killing both the pilot and navigator. Ukraine is estimated to have around 40 active MiG-29s, although the exact number is difficult to establish because of repairs, reserve aircraft and combat losses.
