For the past 50 years, Mandurah SES volunteers have answered the call to pull cars from houses, battle flood emergencies and search for lost loved ones. But if you ask the unit’s oldest volunteers what jobs have stayed with them, it isn’t always the biggest emergencies they remember. SES volunteers never know what they’re going to get when the call goes out. “There’s been a duck rescue, we’ve had horses, we’ve had pelicans, we’ve had kittens in walls, we’ve helped dolphins,” Mandurah SES manager Mr Stickland said. “This pelican had a fishing line hooked into it,” Mr Norris said.
