Illegal construction cases in Macau are on the rise, with 433 new files opened in the first half of this year – already more than half of last year’s total – while voluntary demolitions surged to 533, exceeding the combined number of the previous two years. Authorities said they first issue warnings and urge residents to remove structures, with joint demolition teams deployed when residents fail to comply, targeting cases that endanger fire safety, life, and property, in line with the Legal Regime for Urban Construction, which has been effective since August 2022.
