Indonesia’s finance minister has publicly invited Toyota to move its main Southeast Asian manufacturing operations from Thailand to Indonesia, offering the Japanese carmaker incentives to support a potential relocation.
“We will support Toyota, but they must bring their main manufacturing operations from Thailand to Indonesia.
Purbaya suggested that Toyota originally chose Thailand because Indonesia had previously offered insufficient incentives to foreign investors and had a weaker investment climate.
The finance minister pointed to Hyundai’s manufacturing investment in Indonesia as evidence of the country’s ability to attract major carmakers.
Toyota Motor Corporation has not responded to the proposal or announced plans to relocate its manufacturing operations from Thailand.
