Almost 29 million people in the UK have already expressed their decision to be a donor via the NHS Organ Donor Register – with 2.8 million people in the East of England already registering their decision to donate their organs after death. While there were modest increases in donations and transplants in the East of England over the past year – with 265 organ donors in 2025/26 compared to 216 the year before and 434 patients receiving transplants compared to 423 the previous year – the figures underline a widening gap between the number of people who donate organs after death and those 653 patients who are waiting for a transplant in the East of England.
