Brazil’s first dedicated battery energy storage auction has drawn 6,091 registered projects totaling 296,807 MW, highlighting unprecedented investor interest in grid scale storage as the country seeks to strengthen power system flexibility amid rapid renewable energy expansion.
The registration figures, released by the federal Energy Research Company (EPE), represent the largest level of participation recorded in Brazil’s electricity sector for a capacity auction.
Among companies publicly linked to potential participation are Elera Renováveis, CdV, Atlas Renewable Energy, Celeo Redes Brasil, Engie, Petrobras, Axia Energia, ISA Energia, and Scatec, indicating interest from established utilities, renewable energy developers, and infrastructure investors.
The geographic distribution of registered projects closely mirrors Brazil’s renewable energy landscape.
Approximately 71.1% of all proposed battery projects are located in the Northeast, the country’s primary wind and solar generation hub.
