Michelle Shocked played the Gilded Balloon Patter House on 6 August, and James Masterson took in her troubled talesA 16-night run at the Edinburgh Fringe festival this year is Michelle’s attempt to present her ‘truth’ about her media portrayal and the story of her court case fighting Google (and her perhaps pyrrhic victory against Google Chrome). She presented a mix of pre-recorded podcast material interspersed with spoken-word interjections, and half a dozen songs. She portrayed her artistic struggles as a David vs Goliath battle, climaxing in a singalong Giant Killer. Her songs, delivered solo with semi-acoustic guitar, were in the vein of performative punk with a country slant. Ultimately, beyond her hardcore, more forgiving following, the show was a fringe piece, though not necessarily of the Fringe.
