A LAWMAKER on Tuesday questioned the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) over the apparent lack of permanent evacuation centers in disaster-prone areas, saying the government may be failing to deliver on a law enacted more than two years ago. 12076, or the Permanent Evacuation Centers Act, had yet to translate into adequate facilities for communities repeatedly hit by disasters. “2 years have passed since RA 12076 was enacted into law, yet our disaster-prone areas are still relying on basketball courts, schools, churches, and barangay halls as evacuation centers,” Mr. Tinio said. Mr. Tinio asked the DPWH how many permanent evacuation centers have been built since 2024 and how many disaster-prone local government units do now have such facilities. He also said that the House minority bloc would scrutinize the DPWH’s implementation of RA 12076 and funding for the facilities during the budget hearings.
