Democracy is under assault. To understand what we’re up against, we need to begin with the architecture of the threat itself. Attacks on democracy and rights are not isolated. What unites these regimes is not shared ideology, it’s a shared determination to undermine both the language and the reality of liberal democracy for their own aggrandisement. And yet, governments and donors are still trying to counter this reality with single-issue, nationally-bounded strategies.
