GRAND FORKS — Grand Forks City Council members gave preliminary approval to update the city’s trespassing ordinance to match changes made to North Dakota Century Code, providing clearer guidelines about prosecutions under the ordinance. A first offense for trespassing is considered a Class B misdemeanor, which has a maximum possible penalty of 30 days of imprisonment and a $1,500 fine. The City Council first approved the trespass ordinance in September last year, allowing law enforcement to issue no-trespass orders to people on city property. The ordinance was approved in part to address safety concerns from some residents for downtown areas like Town Square. By Nov. 1 last year, Police Chief Jason Freedman said six no-trespass orders were issued, all for individuals found trespassing in Town Square.
