South Australia will hold a royal commission into artificial intelligence amid concerns about the potential negative impacts on society. The premier hoped the $3 million royal commission – which will hear from AI companies, industry bodies, and academics – would make recommendations “that are well thought through, able to be adopted by state governments and that others may follow”. Malinauskas said the implications AI represents for the creative industries, the way AI is used in schools, and deployed in the delivery of public services where advances can be gained – “these things need to be thought through”. “Ensuring security keeps pace with capability is a new, defining challenge for public sector agencies as AI rollout continues.” The SA royal commission will begin on 1 October with a report expected mid-next year.
