Protected from poaching in his secure environment, Yossi demonstrates the full natural potential of African elephants. Over the decades, he has fathered 32 offspring—children and grandchildren now living in zoos worldwide, contributing to conservation efforts for African elephants, which the UN's International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies as "endangered." Estimates suggest an African elephant is illegally killed approximately every 30 minutes for the ivory trade. Like all elephant calves, Yossi was born tuskless and weighing 70 kilograms. But he has grown continuously since, reaching his current estimated weight of 7 tons and earning the title of largest elephant in captivity anywhere in the world.
