Police Watchdog Invokes Mandate Following Incident In Bancroft

BANCROFT-The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate after a 17-year-old male reportedly ingested an illicit substance while in police custody in Bancroft.
A spokesperson for the The SIU told Kawartha 411 News that at approximately 5 p.m. on August 8, 2026, OPP officers attended the area of Hastings Street North in Bancroft to investigate a shoplifting call.
The following morning, while lodged in a cell, the teenager complained he wasn’t feeling well, and had ingested an illicit substance.
The OPP says on Sunday, August 9, 2026, shortly after 8:00 a.m., members of the Bancroft OPP arrested an individual in relation to an ongoing investigation.
As the SIU has invoked its mandate, the OPP says it will not be able to provide further information.
