The veteran firefighter has regularly scrambled from his central London base to battle wildfires raging in the capital’s outer boroughs. The flames ravaging Ingrebourne Hill came within about 30 feet of his house. Strand, a wildfire support officer, estimates about 80 per cent of his calls are now for grassfires. He is regularly deployed back to east London from his permanent base at Dowgate Fire Station, in the City of London. Some LFB officers have also volunteered to support brigades tackling recent wildfires in Derbyshire, Greater Manchester and the Isle of Wight.
