President Donald Trump's Department of the Interior (DoI) has reached an agreement with German energy company RWE $1.2 billion to abandon its offshore wind projects in the U.S."After careful consideration, it was determined there is no path forward to permit these projects in the U.S. for the foreseeable future," the company said in a statement. Trump has been a stalwart opponent of energy sources other than fossil fuels. Earlier this year, while committing $700 million in taxpayer money to prop up the U.S. coal industry, he argued that successful countries rely on coal, before criticizing what he called "failure countries" for investing in renewable energy sources such as wind power. Instead, it said it plans to invest approximately €17 billion ($19.6 billion) in the U.S. over the next six years "to grow its generation capacity." The BBC reports that, in March 2026, the DoI reached a deal with French company TotalEnergies that put an end to their offshore wind projects in the U.S.
