UMN research finds cannabis use is declining among youth

Although researchers found an overall declining trend in cannabis use, research shows that adolescents who face social stigmatization, such as bullying rooted in discrimination, tend to use cannabis more often.
“Our recommendation is that cannabis use prevention activities target homophobic and transphobic bullying to combat the disparities in cannabis use,” Eisenberg said.
Though research is still developing, Cannabis Research Center director Traci Toomey said that significant concern remains regarding youth cannabis use because of the potential impacts the drug has on a developing brain.
Through Eisenberg’s and the University’s research study, the teams linked lower cannabis use to a potential driver of the positive trends in health and participation.
Cannabis is not the only declining trend among youth.
