Preservation of Maine’s oldest state psychiatric hospital built of stone quarried from the now abandoned Hallowell Granite Works is moving into its final phase, with completion expected by spring 2027.
The Stone Building, which housed the Augusta Mental Health Institute (AMHI), Maine’s first state Mental Health Institute, comprises six connected structures, collectively covering 262,000 sq ft in the state’s East Campus Historic District, says Sharon Huntley, spokeswoman for the Maine Dept.
Once fully restored and occupiable, the state plans to relocate some state agencies currently occupying leased space into the Stone Building.
“Constructed from more than a thousand embedded photographs, the model assisted the team in documenting deficiencies, replicating historic building components requiring replacement, and developing two-dimensional photorealistic elevations.”
The team used similar technology to develop floor plans and document the complex brick masonry, arched and cast-in place concrete tunnel systems surrounding the stone building.
