Philadelphia School District officials want to give all eighth graders opportunities to take an algebra class before they enter high school, but there are still hurdles to overcome. According to a Chalkbeat Philadelphia report, current access to algebra in the district remains unequal. Approximately 51 district schools are still without eighth-grade algebra, according to district figures. For the upcoming school year, Elliott said 42 district schools will offer algebra as a dedicated class or section, while 33 schools will participate in Cross School Learning. According to Chalkbeat Philadelphia, approximately 400 Philadelphia district eighth graders passed the Pennsylvania state math test in 2025.
