Dexter City Council is considering restrictions on fertilizer use near the Huron River, Mill Creek and other waterways as part of a regional effort to reduce nutrient pollution and harmful algal blooms. The Huron River Watershed Council is a nonprofit organization that has worked for more than 60 years to protect and restore the Huron River and the surrounding land that drains into it. “The real difference about this fertilizer ordinance is that residents can still apply it,” Lossing said. Linden Township later adopted a 50-foot buffer and a seasonal restriction ending April 1, while Dexter Township selected a 100-foot buffer and a May 1 end date. City Manager Justin Breyer said much of the land along Mill Creek within the city is owned by Dexter or Dexter Community Schools.
