Observers report far fewer insects on trees, vehicles, and patios compared with previous summers. Kevin Roth, director of education and outreach at the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, told Action News 6abc that the decline has been substantial. Habitat work by the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust, including removing the tree-of-heaven — the lanternfly's preferred host — may be contributing to the decline. Montgomery County, in particular, remains within Pennsylvania's spotted lanternfly quarantine zone. Even with improvement in the number of sightings, the lanternfly remains a threat to grapevines and trees.
