Every day, thousands of companies pull open source code off the internet, drop it into their products, and ship. The vast majority of cloud-native infrastructure deployments are built on open source components. The survey was conducted by Linux Foundation Research and included, among its sponsors, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Toyota, and Intel. A market expanding that fast generates more shared code, more shared dependencies, and more shared maintenance obligations. The ones still treating open source as a free lunch now have a number for what that meal actually costs.
