Iran has appointed former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Mohsen Rezai as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), replacing Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, according to Reuters. No reason was given for the leadership change, and it was not immediately clear whether it would lead to any shift in Iran’s security or foreign policy. Mohsen Rezai, 71, led the IRGC from 1981 to 1997, including during most of the Iran-Iraq War. The Supreme National Security Council, chaired by the president, coordinates Iran’s security and foreign policy. In a separate decree issued on Sunday, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei also appointed Rezai as his representative on the Supreme National Security Council along with Saeed Jalili, citing Rezai’s experience, including his role during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War.
